1. What is an ENUM domain?

An ENUM domain is the mapping of a traditional telephone number according to the format of the ITU reference E.164 (e.g. +353 1 1234567) into a domain. This is made in accordance with the RFC 3761 of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF ). Like 'normal' domain names ENUM domains are read from right to left. On the right hand side there is .e164.arpa., which has been defined as an international ENUM domain by the IETF. Following that there is the corresponding country code, again following from the right to the left side. So, +353 is changed into 3.5.3.e164.arpa. the Irish ENUM top-level-domain (TLD). For example, the corresponding ENUM domain for the telephone number +353 1 1234567 would be: 7.6.5.4.3.2.1.1.3.5.3.e164.arpa

2. How can I check if my number is registered?

IENUM Ltd offers a simple query tool on its website (www.enum.ie), which allows a user to check the existence of an ENUM domain for any telephone number from the Irish number network. If there is an existing ENUM delegation, the contact data of the proper registrar is displayed. In case of disputes regarding registrations, the authorised user of the call number can file a complaint to the proper registrar. For this purpose IENUM Ltd provides a contact form (web address), which is used for forwarding the complaint to the registrar in question.

3. What can I do if there is an ENUM domain for my telephone number without my approval?

If an ENUM domain is used for a telephone number without the knowledge and approval of the number's authorised user, the user has the right to object at any time as long as he/she hasn't explicitly agreed to the delegation. In this case he/she can file a complaint to the ENUM registry IENUM Limited.

4. Which number ranges are supported?

ENUM domains are currently supported in the following number ranges:

Geographic numbers (e.g. .01....)
mobile phone numbers
VoIP Numbers (.076..)
Personal Number Services (.0700..)

Currently unsupported numbers include numbers for premium rate services, Universal Access numbers and freephone numbers.

5. How is validation performed?

Validation is performed using photo identification accompanied by either a copy of an invoice/bill or a check against the telephone listings. All registrants must submit these documents by fax or email as part of the registration process. This validation method requires the specification of a complete address, to be compared against that on the submitted documents. The cost of validation is 25 euro incl. VAT for initial regsitrations. Any subsequent revalidations are charged at 5 euro (time intervals of 6 months). Thus, the total validation costs are 30 euro for the first year and 10 euro for the following years.

6. When is a revalidation necessary?

Revalidation is necessary to ensure that the registrant is still authorised to use that number. Validations can have different durations depending on the validation method used. A new validation confirmation must be sent in time before the expiration including a relevant new validation.

7. Which products support ENUM?

ENUM is supported by the following software products:

SER (SIP Express Router)
Asterisk

In many cases the ENUM domain is used during the communication set-up of the servers. This means that the support of ENUM is not necessarily essential by the client.

8. Who is allowed to register an ENUM domain?

The registration of an ENUM domain can theoretically be performed by anyone with an allowed telephone number type. However, it must be pointed out that a registration must not be requested unless there is an explicit agreement from the authorised user of the telephone number. One exception to this rule are ENUM domain requests by communication service providers who gain usage rights for the corresponding telephone number according to an official letter or a transfer. Consequently, the usage rights for an ENUM domain are only applicable in accordance with the usage rights for the corresponding telephone number. The authorised user of the telephone number has the right to decide whether the ENUM domain shall be registered or not. This is accomplished through validation, where the applicant must prove that he is the authorised user of the corresponding telephone number.

9. Who is the registrant of a domain?

The registrant of an ENUM domain is the person who authorises the delegation, modification or deletion of an ENUM domain with a registrar (e.g. my-enum.ie).
